What we treat

Cataract

Cataract means opacity of the eye lens which may impair visual acuity. There are a number of factors responsible for the development of this disease, e.g.:

  • aging (senile cataract),
  • genetic background (genetic cataract),
  • complications of general diseases e.g. diabetes or tetany (secondary cataract),
  • as sequelae of eye injury (traumatic cataract).
  • blurred vision (as if ‘”foggy” or “frosty” vision),
  • necessity of frequent glasses replacement or problems with fitting a suitable correction,
  • as the disease progresses, visual acuity deteriorates,
  • blindness in extreme cases.

The only effective method of cataract treatment is its surgical removal. Moreover, it is not recommended waiting until the cataract “matures”. The decision to perform surgery should be taken when the opacity of the lens makes it difficult for the patient to perform everyday activities.

In Delavi, the procedure of cataract removal is performed using a novel method called phacoemulsification It involves breaking up of the opaque lens with ultrasound, and then its removal. An artificial lens (individually tailored for each patient) is then inserted into the empty lenticular capsule. The whole surgery is performed by a tiny eye incision (below 2.2 mm) without the need of suturing.

The procedure is performed as day surgery, and the patient may usually return home within 2 hours after the procedure. Ophthalmological follow-up is necessary according to the schedule established by the doctor.

For whom?

  • for patients with any type of cataract,
  • for patients with closed-angle glaucoma for the purpose of unblocking,
  • to remove a vision defect which does not qualify for laser surgery, so-called refractive lens exchange.

Advantages of the procedure:

Importantly, the procedure does not cause significant restrictions. The patient may perform most activities, and after several days, he/she may return to their previous lifestyle.

Postoperative instructions

  • avoid physical exercise in the postoperative period,
  • do not apply pressure on the operated eye,
  • adhere to the instructions on applying eye drops,
  • come in for the centre in the case of pain or vision deterioration.

Thanks to technological development, modern medicine gives many possibilities regarding the selection of the lens to be inserted during the cataract removal surgery. Thus, the procedure may combine a therapeutic function (cataract removal) with the correction of vision defect, including presbyopia.

These are unifocal lenses which enable correction or significant reduction of far vision defect. After the surgery, the patient must wear reading glasses.

These are made of special hydrophobic material. They may be also equipped with UV and blue light filters. Their biggest advantage is the possibility to correct any type of defect. Bifocal lenses (for far and near vision) and trifocal lenses (for far, near and intermediate distances). Each of them may also be adjusted to remove astigmatism (Toric).

The choice of a suitable lens is preceded by a very detailed ophthalmological examination and consultation with a specialist.

Secondary cataract is opacity of the posterior lens capsule, which is created in some patients after the procedure of cataract removal. It occurs in more than 30% of patients undergoing surgery.

YAG POSTERIOR CAPSULOTOMY

Treatment of this condition is extremely fast and painless. The procedure is performed in the ophthalmological room in a sitting position at a slit lamp, with the use of YAG laser. It lasts only a few minutes and actually gives immediate effect.
